Offset, 1/3 of rap’s trio Migos, has decided to launch a $500,000
fundraiser for cancer with The American Cancer Society. Offset has
personally coped with losing a loved one, his grandmother. In her honor,
Offset plans to raise funds to support cancer prevention and “access to
care in underserved communities.”
On The American Cancer Society’s campaign page, Offset revealed his
grandmother, Sallie Ann Smith was more like a mentor and coach to him.
Offset stated, “It was really tough losing my grandma to cancer and one
of the hardest things I have dealt with in my life.” He added, “She
motivated me to do my best and go for it; one of my biggest coaches.”
According to Cancer.org, “In 2016, an estimated 1,685,210 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and 595,690 people will die from the disease.” To be more specific, according to Cancer.org, “About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2017, an estimated 252,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 63,410 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.”
We all know someone who has been affected by cancer. It may be your
mother, father, daughter, cousin, aunt, or even yourself. With
healthcare access being fickle from Republicans and Democrats, it’s nice
to see Offset’s gesture to give more access to resources to cancer
victims.
Offset’s mom, Latabia Woodward, is really proud of him and have been
supporting The American Cancer Society for several years. Woodward
stated, “Losing a loved one to cancer is devastating, and we need to
continue to help educate our communities about early detection and
screening guidelines. I am incredibly proud of Offset’s desire to help
save the lives of others, genuine heart, and talent as an artist.”
In addition to the fundraiser, Offset created an incentive for people
who donates more than $10. Once you donate $10 you entered a contest to
get flown to Los Angeles, get a free shopping spree, and hang out with
Offset.
